In simple words , emotion is any strong agitation of the feelings actuated by experiencing love, hate, fear etc., and usually accompanied by certain physiological changes.

Emotion appear to influence action in various ways.

The stronger the emotion, the greater the activity to which it will give rise.

It is a well-known fact that emotions disturb our logical thinking.

Whenever any emotion is aroused we usually lose our head; functioning of our vital organs changes due to stimulation of our nervous system.

As a matter of fact, various emotions play a very significant role in the field of games and sports such as fear ,anger, pride, jealousy, hope, worry, etc.

The emotions have  negative effect on the movement of muscles.

In fact, such emotions should be under control for the better performance in games and sports.

Affects of badminton psychology

As the saying goes, “Emotion is temporary states of mind; do not let it permanently destroy you”, negative emotion can hurt athletes’ physical and mental strength.

It starts off with losing prime intensity, with full of frustration and anger, the intensity will amplify and leads to muscle tension, breathing difficulties, and loss of coordination.

It causes athletes to feel exhausted and tire quickly.

By the time, having poor stamina cause athletes to experience helplessness and hopelessness until their intensity drops drastically and they no longer have the physical capabilities to perform well.

When your emotion conquers your body, eventually it will hurt you mentally too.

Along with negative emotion , negative thoughts will affect athletes’ confidence level until they tend to have difficulty focusing on what will assist them to perform well and lead to a lack of motivation and enthusiasm.

Methods of Controlling Emotions, badminton psychology

A number of research studies have shown that we can control our emotions well before the provoking situation occurs.

We can prepare ourselves ahead of time. We can take some physical actions, can learn new ways of thinking and understanding how emotions work.

Emotions can be controlled up to a desired level by some of these methods.

Re framing a technique to make your mind stronger

In re framing, the event or the behavior remains the same but its meaning or “frame” is adapted.

For example, a soccer striker’s game suffered after a period where he was not scoring many goals.

A sport psychologist took the player to observe one of his favorite strikers playing and asked him to list every contribution the striker made to the team’s play, including: scoring, assisting, making forward runs and being available for passes, holding the ball up and bringing teammates into play, and pressuring defenders when they have the ball.

When the struggling striker considered how he was performing on all elements, he recognized that he had many positive attributes despite his lack of goals.

This made the striker become aware that he was contributing to the team in other ways.

Re framing may also be useful in changing the appraisal of symptoms while also gaining some coping skills.

An appraisal of a particular stimulus (e.g. changes in breathing rate) from signal to panic (“I will play poorly today”) to a signal to use a deep breathing technique.

In this example, re framing may have altered the athlete’s perceived ability to cope.

The sporting world is a very unpredictable one, therefore, athlete’s are prone to changes in arousal and emotions.
In order to perform at your best, your mind needs to clear so you can fully focus on the task at hand.
The above techniques as well as others such as imagery and progressive muscular relaxation (PMR) can prove very useful for athletes when practiced on a regular basis.

Meditation is done by all professional athlete once in a while

It can be used for controlling your emotions.

it can be ideal for staying calm in between the rounds of competition.

First of all, sit in a comfortable position.

After that pick or select a short focus word that has a significant meaning for you and that you associate with relaxation.

The word may be relax, smooth, etc.

Then close your eyes slowly.

After that breathe slowly repeating the focus word.

Be passive and avoid other thoughts which come into your mind.

Continue this process for 10 to 15 times.

Repression

Repression means to avoid the undesirable emotions when these arise in an individual.

However, their may be some problems in using this method because sometimes the undesirable emotions may enter into unconscious mind and later on these burst spontaneously with greater force.

Introspection in badminton psychology

It may be applicable for educated individuals.

They can introspect themselves in the stages of different  emotions.

As soon as they start introspection into themselves, emotions are usually vented out.

Some other methods:

Control your breathing: For appropriate control over your emotions you should try to control your breathing whenever you note certain physiological changes such as dry mouth and elevated heart rate.

Find a comfortable place.

Take a normal breathe first, the start inhalation.

Allow your chest to expand as you fill air into your lungs.

Take six to ten deep breathe per minute.

In this way, you can fill air into your breathing which will ultimately control your emotions.

Exercise: Whenever you are under emotions, start doing exercises or involve yourself in physical activity.

This will help you in releasing natural mood boosting chemicals called ‘endorphin’.

A number of studies have also shown that the individuals who perform regular exercise feel more energetic, calm and positive.

Avoid the situation: You should avoid the circumstances or situations that trigger unwanted as well as negative emotions.

Suggestions by the coaches/friends: At various stages during training or competitions, coaches/friends can make the sports persons conscious of their unusual emotional patterns.
